Westcliff to top the Men's Premier tree at Christmas
A final festive flurry of matches with action in the Men's, Mixed, Masters and Combi divisions.
Westcliff ensured they would be Christmas number one in the Men’s Premier division with a 7-2 victory away at last season’s champions Fitzwimarc. Despite the scoreline, there were lots of close rubbers with five going to three games in a cracker of a match. Matt Allum and David Clark won all three of their rubbers and were supported by doubles from James Allpress and Lee Scott and Matthew and Isaac Pearson. Phil Tuffee and Daniel Batchelor picked up the two points for Fitz who are now seven points behind in the title race.
Over in the Mixed Premier, Phoenix Flames did the double over their Seconds as they beat them 7-2 to move up into third. Holly Sims and Jay Clark and Tracey Haylett and Greg Roffey both secured hat-tricks with the former pairing not dropping a game. Jill Beaver and Humaid Ghori grabbed the other point for the First team. Sara Thompson and Russell Dobson and Carly Horsler and Danny Peach won a rubber each for the Flames Second team who remain rooted to the bottom.
Hawkwell hosted Phoenix Flames in a top of the table clash in the Masters Premier and it was the second placed Hawks who triumphed 4-2 to move above their opponents. Keith Wood, Chris Green and Heidi Paine all won two rubbers as they defeated last year’s champions. Tracey Haylett grabbed the two rubbers for the Flames who were just a point away from making it 3-3 in the final rubber.
Phoenix Flames picked up a first win in the Combination Premier division with a 6-0 win away at Eastwood. Jay Clark and Danny Peach both won three perfect rubbers and Holly Sims and Carly Horsler also secured hat-tricks for the visitors. Clare Roberts and Laura Whiteman came closest to getting a point for Eastwood who stay bottom of the league.
Finally, in the division below, Phoenix Flames Seconds extended their lead at the summit to twelve points with a 5-1 victory over SLH Rayleigh. Jack Baskett and Corinne Telling starred for the home side as they both won three rubbers each to make it four wins from five this season. Jan Watt and Colin Campbell helped SLH to their point as they remain in fourth and winless.
Player of the Week: Holly Sims - six out of six rubbers for Holly last week to help lead both her Mixed team and Combi team to victory. Also seasonal to have a bit of Holly at Christmas!
Team of the Week: Hawkwell (Masters) - an excellent win for the Hawks over last year’s Masters champions. The victory keeps them unbeaten and means they will head into 2024 at the top of the tree!
